National Poetry Day was founded in 1994 by the charity ‘Forward Arts Foundation’, whose mission is to celebrate excellence in poetry and increase its audience. As part of our National Poetry Day assembly, the children were inspired by some images of what freedom might be like for different people and animals.

Following this spark of interest, a number of children produced some incredible poems and in various different styles. You can now see some on display outside our wonderful Library. Here is just a taster:

Freedom

Freedom walks the universe,

and steps across the Milky Way.

She greets the moon and then the sun,

who heralds in the brand new day.

 

Freedom flies where eagles soar

far from the grip of the mindless man.

Who seeks supremacy on Earth,

with others not in his plan.

 

Freedom watches gulls in flight,

the sweep across the sea

and smiles as rivers drift and flow

to far and unknown destinies.

 

Freedom is not afraid.

free to sing hummingbird, hummingbird

freedom is a bee feeling the buzz

the letter in flight

freedom is language dancing

in a thousand creatures

freedom is writing

letters becoming words

becoming stories

brimming with worlds

letting you water yourself

in a pond of ducks

free to bake the flour

flowering out of your head

scripting, flying, thinking

your chickens are free
