Dr Rosa Andujar provided an intriguing insight into the world of Liberal Arts, a degree choice increasing in popularity in the past five years in the UK.
"Liberal Arts teaches the importance of the ability to transfer skills, work across different areas and innovative thinking that other degrees may not focus on."
6th Form student Finn
Dr Andujar, Deputy Director of Liberal Arts at King's College London, gave students a real insight into the benefits of studying Liberal Arts as an alternative to following a single subject degree path. Finn from the Lower 6th relates her talk to us:
On Friday, Dr Rosa Andújar, a professor of Classical and Hellenic studies and a professor of Liberal Arts at King's College London came to talk at the sixth form. For many students this was an interesting talk because of the growing popularity of Liberal Arts in the UK, yet the surprising lack of information and knowledge about the course.
Required modules include Lives of London, a language module, Space, Power and Agency and Translation across disciplines. Much like the IB Liberal Arts touches on how we learn and the importance of broadening your education.
Liberal Arts is a very flexible degree where students can study multiple subjects at one time and take up new subjects whilst simultaneously devoting time to a major subject of your interest. Liberal Arts is growing more popular every year and is now available at notable universities such as King's College London, Warwick, Durham, Exeter, Birmingham and Bristol.
In terms of career opportunities that Liberal Arts can bring it is much like many degrees that have no specific job attached to them. However, Liberal Arts teaches the importance of the ability to transfer skills, work across different areas and innovative thinking that other degrees may not focus on.
Dr Andujar's talk was part of a packed week of 'Inspire Me' sessions in the 6th Form with subjects ranging from pain relief to autism research. Why not read our students thoughts on these talks and their excellent speakers here.
